Disputes with China, Philippines Modernization of the Navy Fleet

The Philippine navy on Wednesday (1/6/2017) ordered the creation of an amphibious landing craft and three small landing craft in a bid to modernize the fleet amid a regional dispute with China in the South China Sea.

The Philippine government seeks to improve military capability through a tool modernization program, including two landing craft built in Indonesia.

President Benigno Aquino III said the Tarlac BRP landing craft, which could transport landing troops, is currently the largest naval vessel.

The vessel was purchased through a 60.1 billion pesos military modernization program that began in 2010, he said at the 118th-anniversary ceremony.

Over time, the Philippine military has deteriorated and became one of the weakest in Asia. Aquino says his government has stepped up military capabilities through the modernization program.

The 123-meter landing vessel, which can also carry helicopters, was the first of two such vessels for the navy. The second vessel, also built in Indonesia, is expected to be delivered next year.

Three smaller landing craft were purchased from Australia in addition to two similar ships donated by the previous Australian government.

Aquino, whose six-year term expires on June 30, says that a common oceanographic research ship that can help chart the seabed is also scheduled to be sent in June.

In addition, there are still two frigates, two submarine attack helicopters, and a large 'high endurance cutter' ship, he added.

Navy Chief Admiral Ceasar Taccad vowed to defend the country's territory.

"Today, the enemy stands at our doorstep and we can no longer exaggerate the urgency of the threat to our maritime interests and the possibility of our territorial integrity," he said.
