German military company Rheinmetall Defense unveiled a specially designed weapon prototype to destroy the T-14 Armata tank and the latest T-90 modification.
Rheinmetall Defense has exhibited a new weapon model primarily developed to destroy the T-14 Armata and T-90 tanks. The Defense Update reports that a 130 mm weapon is ready to be installed into a new tank being developed by Germany and France in place of the Leopard 2 and Leclerc battle tanks.
The technical demonstration of this weapon was first held in May 2016. HIS Jane's 360 websites said the weapons capability began to be tested at the Rheinmetall firing range after being exhibited at the 2016 Eurosatory International Defense and Security Exhibition.
Currently, Rheinmetall Defense is busy creating a special projectile penetrating shield for this weapon. According to the company, this weapon is equipped with an enhanced launch system and an extended tungsten or tungsten core.
Nevertheless, Russian experts argue that the ability of the weapon is impossible to evaluate before projectile trials are carried out.
West Want to Compete Armata
Germany began to consider modernizing the Leopard 2 tanks after Russia exhibited the "Armata" combat platform and the T-14 tank built on the platform. Russia's latest combat vehicle is able to survive and has the potential of combat is superior to tanks made in other countries.
Now, with the background of preparations for the supply of T-14s into the ranks of Russian, French and German soldiers holding bilateral talks that not only discuss the development of the latest generation artillery weapons, but also the planned replacement of "Leopard" and "Leclerc" heavyweight tanks.
Previously, as reported by the US Foreign Affairs magazine National Interest, military experts point out that the German "Leopard 2" tanks, considered one of the best tanks in the world, do not actually have projectiles capable of penetrating the T-80 tank armor, T-90 and T-14 "Armata" made in Russia.
However, Germany is actively working to resolve the problem, either by adapting US-made projectiles to their tanks or by developing depleted uranium ammunition (uranium with lower U235 isotope content than their natural uranium -red.) Alone, writes National Interest.
Not Sure Effectively
Although Rheinmetall Defense presents its latest weapon as a military device to counter Russian "Armata" platform, it is not yet known whether the weapon can actually effectively counter the latest Russian-made technology.
"Germany's newest 130 mm weapon is under construction and it is not yet known whether the weapon is indeed capable of penetrating Russian tankers," Editor-in-Chief of National Defense magazine Igor Korotchenko said in an interview with RBTH.
Korotchenko stressed that at this time the weapon projectiles in question have not been created. News of its superiority over Russian tanks is nothing more than a producer's effort to advertise its products.
According to one RBTH source, experts in the military industrial complex have not yet given a final decision on the new weapons made in Germany. "Currently, we have sent our representatives to conduct a review," said the source.
In April 2016, the Russian Ministry of Defense signed a contract for the purchase of one hundred tank units under the "Armata" platform. According to the General Director of the company Ulravagonzavod Vyacheslav Khalitov, Russian armed forces will receive the first series consisting of a hundred units of T-14 tanks in 2017 - 2018.
