Iran Announces New Missile Production

Iranian state media has announced the launch of a new missile production line later this week. The announcement comes amid tensions between the United States (US) and Tehran.

"The Sayyad 3 missile can reach a height of 27 km (16 miles) and travel 120 km (74 miles)," Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan said in a ceremony as quoted by Reuters on Sunday (23/7/2017).

"The missile can target combat aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles and helicopters," Dehghan added.

On that occasion Deghan alluded to the US military agreement with Saudi Arabia worth USD 110 billion. He said the deal announced during Trump's visit to Riyadh was intended as a threat to Iran.

"We recently witnessed a massive purchase paid by some countries in the region as a ransom to the United States and they intend to bring weapons to the region, and this purchase is done in order to threaten Iran's Islam," Dehghan said.

Last week, the US imposed new economic sanctions on Iran. The sanctions were imposed for the ballistic missile program and Tehran's "evil activities" in the Middle East which reduced the positive contribution of Iran's nuclear deal 2015.

The move signals that President Donald Trump's government is trying to put greater pressure on Iran while maintaining an agreement between Tehran and six world powers to curb its nuclear program in return for lifting international oil and financial sanctions.

The US government says it targets 18 entities and individuals who support what it says as "illegal perpetrators of Iran or transnational criminal activity".
