Taliban Attack Afghan Military Base, 24 Soldiers Killed

At least 26 Afghan soldiers and 13 others were wounded after the Taliban attacked a military base in Kandahar province.

The Afghan Defense Ministry said Wednesday that the Taliban attacked a military camp in the Karzali region of Khakrez district on Tuesday night.

"Afghan forces fought bravely and killed 80 Taliban," said Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman General Dawlat Waziri.

Residents who live around the military base said gunfire occurred for several hours.

Initially, a motorcade of 30 vehicles carrying hundreds of Taliban attacked the base from various directions.

The Taliban group justified their action in Kandahar via its Twitter account.

The Taliban are continuing to step up their campaign against government troops that have aggravated the war-torn country's security concerns since Nato troops ended their combat mission in December 2014.

While the Afghan military with various shortcomings including high desertion and corruption fought hard to defeat the Taliban.

According to the US-based monitoring agency SIGAR, casualties falling among Afghan troops have increased by 35 percent by 2016, or about 6,800 troops and police have been killed.

Moreover, Taliban groups are increasingly sophisticated in staging their attacks this year.

In April more than 140 Afghan troops were killed as the Taliban attacked a military base outside the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif.

While in March, Taliban members disguised as doctors attacked Sardar Daud Khan Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan's largest military hospital.
