According to IB Times reports, Iran and Saudi Arabia have been locked in the "cold war" of the Middle East for more than 30 years.
Saudis who are considered to represent Sunnis are noted to have close ties with the West. While Iran is considered to represent the official Shiites declared anti-West after the Islamic Revolution broke out in Tehran in 1979.
Both countries have competed to assert their religious and political ideology in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia has supported rebel forces who want to overthrow President Bashar Al-Assad's regime in the Syrian conflict. While Iran stood to support Assad's regime.
Iran and Saudis also engage tensions in the Yemeni conflict. The Saudis support the government of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi who nearly toppled the Houthi rebels. While Iran, it is considered to support the Houthi rebels by opposing Saudi aggression and coalition in Yemen.
Iran has also often accused the Saudi only of representing the interests of the United States (US) in the Middle East. The Saudis accused Iran of using its influence in the Persian Gulf and creating a nuclear arsenal that feared to disrupt the Middle East.
Tensions between the two countries also heated up during the Hajj incident in Mina. In the incident, Iran blamed the Saudis after many pilgrims, mainly from Iran, died as a result of being trampled on their way to jumrah.
